Abstract

In this thesis, the complexity of organizational life is explored through an examination of the relationship between Women and Rural Economic Development (WRED), an Ontario-based non-profit organization, and the volunteer co-ordinators of WREDs Rural Womens Business Networks. These Networks are located throughout the province of Ontario in Canada.Qualitative interviews were conducted with 26 network co-ordinators and 3 WRED staff. An analysis of the interviews showed that each WRED/co-ordinator relationship is unique in its construction. A soft systems perspective was used to help make sense of the differing assumptions which exist among organizational members.Analysis of the data led to an understanding of the variety of needs and the variety of perceptions of the organizational structures which are present among co-ordinators and within WRED. Organizations are conceived of as processes of communication through which organizational members construct their organizational reality. Recommendations are made as to ways in which the organizing process at WRED can be made more explicit.
