Abstract

This is an action research project that investigates the succession process and conflicts that occur within the nonprofit sector when the Executive Director (ED) position becomes vacant.Positions, such as the Executive Director, help determine the focus of the organization and staff effectiveness. During this time of change conflicts result which can be detrimental to the organization and its people. It is important to support the ED leaving and the ED arriving as well as the organization and its people. People are faced with many uncertainties, that can either harm their organization or refocus them on its purpose. The goal of any management team is to have its people focused on the organizations purpose rather than on conflict due to the changes.Through this qualitative research project various organizations in Victoria, B.C. have been studied to understand the challenges facing them. There are no right or wrong ways of approaching the succession of an ED--each situation must be approached as unique. This project is part of the process that one organization is undergoing as it begins to look at the issue of replacing management due to retirement.
