Abstract

This thesis is an investigation of the effectiveness of a community approach to environmental education, specifically addressing two pilot projects of the Neighbourhood Green Up program. These projects took place in two housing cooperatives in the city of Guelph between January and June of 1994. Semi-structured in-depth interviews were used to gather information from twenty participants, and three program designers and implementors. Documentation was also analyzed in order to gather information about the program. Six factors that influenced and promoted environmentally responsible behaviour were identified in this study. These factors were: in-depth knowledge of issues and the environment; personal investment; knowledge and skill in using environmental action strategies; internal locus of control; intention to act; and a community approach. Overall, the Neighbourhood Green Up program was perceived to be successful in inducing individual behavioural change. As well, it was effective in generating change in community behaviour. Recommendations for improving this program and for future research were made.
