Abstract

This thesis reports an investigation into the impact of training and other factors on the length of service of volunteer Board members of non-profit organizations in two rural regions of Southern Ontario.A descriptive research methodology using face-to-face and telephone interviews was followed.Findings confirm an impact of training, prior experience and other factors on length of service.Based on the investigation, it is recommended that: (1) Non-profit organizations formalize a Board training plan that includes at least: (a) New Board Member Orientation Sessions, (b) Board Governance Workshops, (c) Board Process Workshops, (d) Board Member Manuals. (2) Non-profit organizations provide refresher training for current Board members on a regular basis, covering (a) Governance Roles And Responsibilities, (b) Policy Development Process Skill Development, (c) Group Decision-Making Process Skill Development. (3) Non-profit organizations use existing video-based training to cost-effectively expand the informal Board-level training opportunities for both new and current Board members.
