Making Waves
The current edition of Making Waves explores the dilemma of scale in CED and social economy initiatives, and how our "small wonders" can be made to generate still bigger benefits. Here's a sample ...

  • A Passion For Renewal - For the last two years Mountain Institution, a British Columbia penitentiary, has played host to a unique experiment in social enterprise: InsideArt, a marketing co-operative for inmate artists.
  • The Good News About CAP - Since 1995 volunteers and nonprofits have leveraged Community Access Program grants to make community internet integral to the development of towns and neighbourhoods across Canada.

Les franchises d'entreprises sociales, vous connaissez ?
The "social franchise" is a way for social enterprises to replicate their products, services, and systems. It's also a way for community groups to get on with running successful businesses. For more details about these and other articles, click here.

Community-Controlled Health Care
A Making Waves Special Edition - Autumn 2007
Given the way our leaders discuss the options for Canada's health care system, you would think we only had two choices: public or private financing and provision. This is a false dichotomy. There is another alternative, that combines our commitment to social justice with quality care, accountability, innovation, and local authority: a blend of public, private, and community responsibility in the evolution of our health care system. What is the potential for community ownership of health care solutions and their implementation? What opportunities does it offer and challenges does it present, to townsfolk and to policy-makers, to unions and to medical professionals? Where does health care fit in the community economic development of the 21st Century? This special edition of Making Waves will help to reframe the national debate over health care and make room for a vast expansion of community-level capacity and authority in this sector. Advertisers, 5000 copies of this special edition will be extended to CED and social economy practitioners, health sector organizations and policy-makers.
