Abstract

This community action-based study examined urban Aboriginal leadership. Although leadership is the subject of extensive scholarly review, Aboriginal leadership has received modest examination. The significance of this research is that it will give Aboriginal agencies in the nonprofit sector capacity to understand and reflect on approaches, philosophy, and methods of Aboriginal leadership. Aboriginal executive directors within Calgary were interviewed; their words are offered as an ethnographic story providing four major themes and 10 critical recommendations. Project findings reveal matters relating to traditional influences, urban Aboriginal leadership and challenges faced by nonprofit agencies. Some of the recommendations contained within include: understanding challenges faced by urban Aboriginal leaders, creating a network of peer mentors, establishing forums on traditional leadership, developing Aboriginal awareness training opportunities, and developing curriculum for and about Aboriginal leadership. Ultimately, funders need to support and recognize the value of Aboriginal leadership.
