Abstract

No issue for long term care facilities is as difficult and controversial as quality of care for those with dementia. Using data from all intermediate care facilities in British Columbia (N = 261) and social and economic factors (often called the socioeconomic environment) for the provinces 20 health regions; the relationships between dementia care quality, regional health unit socioeconomic status, facility size (number of beds), facility association (not-for-profit or for-profit), facility type (integrated or special care unit) and dementia severity (mild/moderate or severe/very severe) were examined.Hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that there was a positively correlated significant relationship between dementia care quality and the socioeconomic environment of health regions in British Columbia. The analyses also revealed that regional health unit socioeconomic status was differentially related to dementia care quality. Regional health unit social and economic status still predicted quality of dementia care when facility size, association and type, and dementia severity were controlled for. Further, facility size, association and type, and dementia severity were related to dementia care quality. However, in both equations health unit socioeconomic environment only had explanatory power in the overall Models of dementia care quality and even for these much of the variability in dementia care quality remained unexplained.
